Kavli implements Cway

The challenge

Kavli, a brand with companies in Scandinavia and England, operates its entities independently, each with different product portfolios and vendors. A few years ago, Kavli Norway decided to launch a hamburger dressing already sold by Kavli Sweden. Despite having their own artwork supplier, Collabra was chosen to adapt the dressing for the Norwegian market, leveraging our extensive knowledge from a long-standing artwork management collaboration with Kavli Sweden.

The execution

During the project, Kavli experienced working with artwork review and approvals in Cway, our artwork management software. Their positive experience led to the later adoption of Cway as the centralized artwork management hub within their organization, supported mainly by their design and artwork vendors.

Santa Maria Spices - Redesign

The challenge

Santa Maria, facing challenges with their previous artwork provider, sought our expertise for a comprehensive project involving over 600 artworks for their spice product line.

Our responsibility was to establish a cohesive design architecture for all markets based on the brand agency's master design, guiding Santa Maria in selecting printers, and managing and executing planning, coordination, print management, design implementation, and proofing stages.

The execution

We assumed project management responsibilities, introducing a systematic design approach across all markets and providing Santa Maria with better understanding of printer capabilities and handling the production process. Recognizing potential delays and information bottlenecks, we dedicated our efforts to detailed planning and scheduling. Our strategy included a structured content management system to reduce revisions and a flexible, agile process to adapt to unforeseen changes without sacrificing project momentum.

The result

This approach led to the successful completion of the artwork with an average of only 1.5 revisions each, primarily due to late volume decisions which were anticipated.

Key Success Factors for the project:

  • Comprehensive article list and content briefs from our initial planning.

  • Resolution of nearly all issues prior to artwork implementation, preventing later obstacles.

  • Clear and precise corrections attributed to our customer onboarding training.

  • An agile methodology that accommodated changes without stalling production.

  • Quick feedback cycles thanks to proactive scheduling.

"To do this project to Collabra as their first “test” project with us I can just give them high remarks, they did a great job and in the end there was not much we needed to correct later on.

Working with Collabra during this project we had good collaboration, from brief to printed label in production went smooth. There were some changes in the beginning of some new phases, but we noticed and corrected the process right away so that everything in the end went smooth and in the end we could launch all items according to plan. Weekly meetings and an open communication was key to the success of the project. Without Collabra’s knowledge and professionalism the project would not have had the end result as it had."

Estrella Ecommerce Optimization

The challenge

Estrella, part of the Intersnack Group, has worked with Collabra since 2009 to market their dynamic product range. In 2023, Estrella tasked us with boosting online sales by developing optimized hero images for mobile Ecommerce to be used across shopping platforms such as K-ruoka.fi and S-kaupat.fi The brief focused on a "less is more" design that highlights the logo and product name while incorporating elements like "NEW!" and other product claims.

The execution

Our expert ecommerce design team focused on visibility and recognition, ensuring customers could quickly identify their preferred products and clearly read the brand and product names. We streamlined the design, removing extraneous elements and enhancing key features to better fit mobile screens and maintain consistency across the brand's product lines.

Also, by establishing guidelines, we ensured that the hero images did not deviate significantly from other product families and regular packshots, presenting a cohesive brand image in the web store.

The result

The new images maintain family coherence, improve legibility, and make it easier for customers to navigate and make decisions in an online store. The new hero images are significantly more identifiable at smaller sizes, enhancing brand presence and helping products stand out.

"Collaboration with Collabra was seamless, quick and effortless. Product image optimization  for Ecommerce and mobile has helped shoppers to make rapid online purchasing decisions with confidence and accuracy when the products stand out better."

Apoteksgruppen - redesign and guidelines

The challenge

Apoteksgruppen, a swedish pharmacy chain with a private brand, has the habit of updating packaging design on a group of products at a time, due to cost efficiency. In 2022, they decided to create basis for a complete packaging redesign. Collabra was given the task.

The assortment consists of three categories – premium, standard and niche. The brief said that they wanted to modernize the packaging design and get it in line with the new overall brand profile. Further, since there are many products, they wished for a structured design architecture that clearly both aligned and divided the categories.

The execution

First, we analyzed the assortment and structured it. Next, we created a couple of design tracks, inspired by the brand profile in different ways and with focus on the category alignment and divison. We also created new fresh and earthy color schemes, in principle based on the old ones, so that shopper recognition wouldn’t be lost.

Upon the selection of design track, we made a guideline for current and future redesign projects, and a toolkit of content that could be combined with the design, e.g. taste icons. Next, we implemented the design step by step and made sure the design had optimal printability through our print management process. We also attended some of the print runs to make sure Pantones were the right tone.

The result

The project was perceived as exceptionally orderly, effortless, and successful, due to our thorough knowledge of the product range and our ability to manage all tasks, providing Apoteksgruppen with a clear foundation for all decisions beforehand.

ARLA PRINT MANAGEMENT

The challenge

In 2014, before Collabra became Arla Food's strategic and operational artwork management partner, Arla encountered a peculiar problem: customers looking for strawberry yogurt were accidentally selecting vanilla due to the packaging's creamy hue resembling strawberry pink.

The issue unveiled

This challenge was among the first we tackled. Collabra's print manager pinpointed the issue swiftly: the TetraBrik packaging's printing process, which usually has a dot coverage of around 15%, meant that colors appeared more saturated than intended. For the vanilla yogurt, a subtle magenta tint intended to suggest creaminess was too prominent at 15% instead of a softer 3-5%, giving the package a pinkish tinge.

The solution

The solution was to adjust the vanilla color to a deeper tone, balancing all colors to maintain their distinctiveness while ensuring accurate coverage.

This case highlights our value in the design evaluation process. As part of Arla's artwork management, we identify and solve design challenges preemptively. Our print manager contributes expertise during design discussions, illuminating possible issues and suggesting alternatives. Ultimately, we help customers understand how their designs will translate from digital or paper to print, ensuring the final product is perfectly optimized for printing.

"You succeeded to correct the color and we were very happy with the result. I also very much appreciate that you can see what can go wrong with printing and that you can come up with creative solutions beforehand. It has helped us many times. Another appreciated thing is that you often save us money by minimizing the amount of inks with the same great result."

Mills - the new CGI process

The challenge

In 2023, several years into the artwork management partnership between Mills and Collabra, and as part of our ongoing commitment to our “make every customer the best customer” initiative, we identified that Mills had an unnecessarily complex and time-consuming process for creating CGIs. We proposed to Mills that we could streamline their process, potentially saving them a significant amount of time and effort.

Mills' process involved numerous manual steps, with files being sent via email for both CGI creation and approval, and the use of a separate agency for CGIs, adding another vendor into the mix. The timelines we observed indicated a "by latest" deadline of five weeks before launch, with a preference for completion "MUCH sooner"—a guideline we found to be very vague.

The execution

We proposed, and eventually  implemented our standardized process:

  • Tick the CGI box on the initial artwork order.

  • Collabra automatically creates CGIs, and approvals in Cway (within the same project as the artwork) are automatically requested. The CGI is ready for approval 1-2 weeks after artwork approval.

  • Collabra drags & drops the approved CGIs into the Cway Media Center, and makes the files available for download by the final receiver: Mediastore.

The result

By implementing our process, the main time and effort savings were as follows:

  • Product managers no longer need to request files from Collabra and manually send them to a specialized vendor.

  • Product managers are not required to verify that the files are in the requested formats.

  • CGIs are automatically produced by the same vendor, in the same process, and place as the artwork, always significantly earlier than the previous process.

  • Approval files are no longer sent via email from the CGI vendor to the product manager. Instead, they approve the files in Cway, which triggers an automated delivery process.
